The present thesis is composed of two parts which are quite distinct in their form but complementary from the point of view of content. The first part gives an account of the reasons, the aspects and the consequences of the presence of the French Navy in Latin America from 1790 to 1830. It shows the importance of the role of French naval officers, both in the information which they provided their government concerning the new American States, and in the establishment of diplomatic and trade relations with these countries. Indeed, at that time, France was pursuing a hesitant policy with regard to the former Spanish colonies and had therefore no other official representation in that part of the world. The second part offers a tool for research workers. It is a precise, semi-analytical inventory of the sources concerning Latin America between 1790 and 1914 to be found in the archives of the French Navy.

Cette thèse comporte deux parties bien distinctes dans leur forme, mais complémentaires quant au fond. La première partie relate les motifs, les aspects et les conséquences de la présence navale de la France en Amérique latine de 1790 à 1830. Elle montre l'importance du rôle tenu par les officiers de marine français à la fois dans l'information de leur gouvernement sur la situation des nouveaux Etats d'Amérique et dans l'établissement des relations diplomatiques et commerciales avec ces pays, à une époque où la France pratiquait une politique hésitante vis-à-vis des anciennes colonies espagnoles et n'y avait donc pas d'autres représentants officiels. La deuxième partie est un outil destiné aux chercheurs puisqu'il s'agit d'un inventaire précis, semi-analytique, des sources concernant l'Amérique latine entre 1790 et 1914, contenues dans les archives de la marine française
