The repetition of images and of objects is a remarkable and constant phenomenon in the modern ar. We can define three categories of works of art in which the repeated images and objects appear. First, the iconographical significance of the repetition due to the techniques of reproduction connected with the modern industrial society ; second, the formal abstract effect of the repeated figurative images or objects ; third, psychological effect of the repetition : feelings of strangeness, anguihs and obsession. In modern art, the artists use the monotonous repetition to search for their own artistic language and to prodduce, paradoxically, a variation of style. Even though it is a matter of the stereotyped and depersonalized repetition, as long as there is a will of artists to pursue the aesthetic and plastic investigations and experimentations, the works of art will always have the value of originality and of uniqueness.

La répétition d'images et d'objets est un phénomène remarquable qui apparait avec constance dans l'art depuis le début du XXème siècle. Nous pouvons définir trois grandes catégories d'œuvres dans lesquelles la répétition d'images et d'objets prend une fonction bien précise. Il y a en premier lieu la signification iconographique de la répétition due à l'intégration des techniques de reproduction liées à la société industrielle ; en second lieu, l'aspect formel de la répétition d'images ou d'objets figuratifs et concrets dont l'effet va vers l'abstraction ; et enfin l'effet psychologique produit par la répétition : un sentiment d'étrangeté, d'angoisse et d'obsession provoque par les artistes qui simulent volontairement l'état irrationnel. La répétition la plus stéréotypée et dépersonnalisée sert paradoxalement aux artistes modernes a varier les styles et à rechercher leur propre langage artistique; malgré la répétition, tant qu'il y aura l'esprit d'innovation et la volonté de faire des recherches, des expérimentations esthétiques et plastiques, les œuvres d'art auront toujours une valeur originale et unique.
