La vita sancti Theobardi (B. H. L. 8045) : Analyse et édition critique

The present thesis offers the critical edition (in book 2) of the vita sancti theodardi (bibliotheca hagiographica latina 8045), a latin hagiographic text from narbonne dating from the end of the 11th century. Saint theodardus was narbonne's archbishop at the close of the 9th century. The edition is presented with a french translation facing the latin text. Book 1 presents an analytic introduction to the text, its critical study. It first retraces its genesis and its diffusion. The manuscript tradition has been restored by means of the cladistic (or phylogenetic) method. Then follows an analysis of the main historical issues raised by the text itself : a quarrel between the jews and the christians about the colaphisation of the jews in toulouse and the ecclesiastical secession of catalonia (those religious problems lasted from the end of the 9th century until the restoration of the metropolis of tarragona in 1089-1091). The social and cultural aspects are studied afterwards : analysis of the political powers, of the episcopal function particularly during the gregorian reform, the liturgical aspects and the analysis of the restorations carried out by saint theodardus in narbonne's cathedral. Finally, we have viewed the issue in a historical perspective (use and function of the oral and written productions; study of saintliness in the text). Book 3 offers a series of illustrations, maps and annexes (edition of unpublished manuscripts).

Cette these propose l'edition critique (au tome 2) de la vita sancti theodardi (bibliotheca hagiographica latina 8045), texte hagiographique latin narbonnais de la fin du 11e siecle. Saint theodard etait archeveque de narbonne a la fin du 9e siecle. L'edition s'accompagne d'une traduction francaise en vis-a-vis du texte. Le tome 1 presente une introduction analytique du texte, son etude critique. Elle retrace d'abord sa genese et sa diffusion. La tradition manuscrite a ete reconstituee au moyen de la methode cladistique (ou phylogenetique). Puis sont etudiees les principales questions historiques soulevees par le texte : une querelle entre les juifs et les chretiens a propos de la colaphisation toulousaine et la secession ecclesiastique de la catalogne (ces problemes religieux durent de la fin du 9e siecle jusqu'a la restauration de la metropole de tarragone en 1089-1091). Les aspects sociaux et culturels sont etudies par la suite: analyse des pouvoirs politiques, de la fonction episcopale en particulier pendant la reforme gregorienne. Des aspects liturgiques et des restaurations effectuees par saint theodard a la cathedrale de narbonne. Enfin, une mise en perspective historique est effectuee (utilisation et fonction de l'oral et de l'ecrit et etude de la saintete dans le texte). Le tome 3 propose un ensemble d'illustrations, cartes, annexes (edition de manuscrits inedits).
