Les plaques-boucles en bronze de style aquitain à l'époque mérovingienne

During the Merovingian period, Aquitaine has produced a very specific group of engraved bronze buckle-plates with varied shapes, of which a common iconographic style conferred it tis own identity. We are used to link to it some bronze "champlevé" belt-fittings with enamel insets resulting from the same social and cultural background. The previous studies dealing with these objects had pointed out several problems without solving them. After the updating of the inventory, we took a close look at decorative motives, especially animal motives, and at chronology. In spite of numerous deficiencies concerning funeral contexts, it has been established that this craft production began at the end of the sixth century and expanded the whole seventh century long. This leads to understand better the diffusion mechanisms of these times commercial ways.

Durant l'époque mérovingienne, l'Aquitaine fut productrice d'un groupe de plaques-boucles en bronze gravé bien spécifique, aux formes variées, mais dont un style iconographique commun lui conférait sa propre identité. On lui rattache communément un certain nombre de garnitures de ceinture en bronze champlevé à remplissage dit d'"émail" résultant d'un même contexte socio-culturel. Les précédentes études de cet ensemble d'objets avaient soulevé plusieurs problèmes sans les résoudre. Apres une remise à jour de l'inventaire, nous avons porté notre attention sur les motifs iconographiques, notamment animaliers, ainsi que sur la chronologie. Malgré d'importantes lacunes en ce qui concerne les contextes funéraires, il a pu être établi que cette production artisanale avait débuté à la fin du sixième siècle pour s'épanouir tout au long du septième siècle. Celle-ci contribue à mieux comprendre les mécanismes de diffusion des courants commerciaux de l'époque.
