In this dissertation, we try to compare the funerary practices of the Nabataeans with those of their neighbours in ancient North Arabia, such as the Jews, the Palmyrenes as well as nomadic tribes living on the desert fringes. The area under Nabataean influence which is included in this study is the Ḥawrān, the Ḥijāz, , the Negev and Sinai. The aim is a synthesis based on archaeological data, both new and old, as well as literary and epigraphic sources. The first part of volume 1 is a typological study of Nabataean funerary monuments. It is followed by a study of the development of the necropoles followed in turn by a study of the spatial organisation of the areas devoted to funerary, domestic and religious monuments. The second part of the first volume offers a synthesis on Nabataean funerary practices as well as an essay on Nabataean society. Volumes 2 and 3 contain respectively the catalogue of the all recorded Nabataean tombs and the plates.

Cette thèse présente une étude comparée des pratiques funéraires des Nabatéens et de leurs voisins du Nord de l’Arabie antique, juifs, Palmyréniens et tribus nomades évoluant aux marges du désert. Elle tient compte de la totalité de l’aire géographique ayant connu une influence nabatéenne, du Ḥawrān au Ḥijāz, en passant par le Néguev et le Sinaï. Sont utilisées des données archéologiques, inédites pour partie, les sources anciennes et l'épigraphie. Dans le volume n° 1, la première partie est une étude typologique des monuments funéraires nabatéens, suivie d’une étude du développement des nécropoles et de l’organisation spatiale des espaces funéraire, domestique et cultuel. La deuxième partie est la présentation des rituels funéraires des Nabatéens, accompagnée d’un essai sur leur société. Dans les volumes n° 2 et 3 se trouvent le catalogue et les illustrations permettant de replacer les monuments funéraires nabatéens dans un contexte régional historique et géographique
