La Citoyenneté en fête : célébrations nationales et intégration politique dans la France républicaine de 1870 à 1914

Never before have the traditional images of public holidays appeared so insufficient to explain the issue of national celebrations instituted at the beginning of the third republic. With the sermons of loyalty and memories, their dynamic can be mesured in relation to the politics of commemoration without precedent since the revolution. Threee goals form the foundation by wich the author examines, step by step, the realisation : to found a moral no longer religious but civil ; to construct the political integration of a france composed of communities and villages ; to make the people the supreme judges of the festival tradition at the same time at the defender of values on wich its rests. Civic moral, citizenship, tradition : three key-moments in a political experience destined to simultaneously to reflect the festival, to live it, then to transmit it. With a principal idea behind this work : if the festival as a dream of a public consciousness based on the passions, no longer belongs to the modern political life, it has howewer contributed to make this modernity possible. Because the festival allows, during the course of these crucial years wich signify the establishment of the french republic, the content of the obligations linked to the national identity. The consequence is the possibility to construct from this time the idea of citizenship, not as a prelude to a "religion laique" but rather as a remedy to resurgence of a communal mysticism, wether it be religious or simply secular.

Jamais l'image traditionnelle des rejouissances publiques n'aura parue si insuffisante a rendre compte de l'enjeu des celebrations nationales mises en place au debut de la iiie republique. Ponctuee de serments de fidelite et d'appels au souvenir, leur dynamique se mesure a l'aune d'un volontarisme sans precedent depuis la revolution. Un triple objectif en forme la cle de voute dont l'auteur suit pas a pas la realisation : fonder une morale non plus religieuse mais citoyenne ; operer l'integration politique d'une france de communautes et de terroirs ; faire du peuple le juge supreme de la tradition festive en meme temps que le depositaire des valeurs sur lesquelles elle repose. Morale civique, citoyennete, tradition : trois moments-cles donc d'une experience politique destinee simultanement a penser la fete, a la vivre, puis a la transmettre. Avec une idee centrale en contrepoint de ce parcours : si la fete, comme reve d'une conscience publique portee par les elans du coeur, n'appartient plus a la modernite de la vie politique, elle a contribue en revanche a la rendre possible. Car elle a sans conteste permis de renouveler, au cours des annees charnieres qui marquent en france l'avenement de la republique, le contenu des obligations liees a l'appartenance nationale. Ce qui en a resulte, c'est de pouvoir poser desormais la citoyennete, non comme le prelude a une religion laique mais comme le remede a toute resurgence d'un mysticisme de la communion, qu'il soit religieux ou simplement seculier.
