This doctoral thesis presents an analysis of sino-american relations from the period immediately following the tiananmen massacre to "normalization" in 1997, signaled by chinese president jiang zemin's visit to the united states. Special emphasis is placed on trade as the focal point of bilateral relations during this period. The organization of the thesis is thematique, and covers the following four areas of sino-american dispute : mfn status for china, bilateral accords on intellectual property rights and market access, china's membership in the gatt and the omc, and the weapons trade. A discussion of american concerns such as human rights, economic security and clinton's "constructive engagement" policy highlight the analysis. The author concludes that while "constructive engagement" could be further pursued in the realm of regional security, clinton's policy has done little to improve the human rights situation in china or to diminish china's chronic trade deficit with the united states. Despite normalization between the two nations, trade and security relations will remain strained as china struggles to adapt her own capacities to the economic realities of the coming century.

Cette these de doctorat analyse les relations sion-americaines depuis la periode suivant le massacre de tiananmen jusqu'a la normalisation de 1997, qui debuta par la visite aux etats-unis du president chinois jiang zemin. La relation commerciale, en tant que pierre angulaire de la relation bilaterale, recevra une attention toute particuliere. Le plan suivi est thematique, articule autour des principales questions qui opposent les deux nations : statut de la nation la plus favorisee, accords bilateraux sur les droits de la propriete intellectuelle, acces au marche interieur chinois, adhesion de la chine au gatt, puis a l'omc, commerce des armes. L'etude s'interessera egalement aux sujets comme les droits de l'homme, la securite economique et la politique de "l'engagement constructif" du president clinton. Cela permettra de conclure que, alors que cette politique d'engagement constructif pourrait se poursuivre a l'interieur d'un cadre regional concernant la securite, la politique americaine a peu acheve dans le domaine des droits de l'homme ou dans celui du deficit commerciale americain vis a vis de la chine. En depit de la normalisation, les relations concernant la defense tout comme les echanges commerciaux demeureront tendus tant que la chine luttera pour adapter ses capacites aux realites economiques du prochain siecle.
