This thesis focuses on the representation of the part of the Anglo-Americans in the liberation of Europe on French television between 1949 and 2009. Cut out in three periods, 1949-1963, 1964-May 1981, May 1981-2009, this work shows the influence, throughout the years, of different factors on the account of this moment in history. The analysis sheds a light on the fact that the representation of the part played by the Anglo-Americans in World War Two does represent a memorial stake within the French society: the moving importance given to the Anglo-American role in the liberation of Europe is significant to the links bound by the French with this moment of their history. In this thesis also lays the question of the impact of external influences on the shaping of the television discourse and of the role of this media as a vector of history and memory.

Cette thèse s’intéresse à l’évolution de la représentation du rôle des Anglo-Américains dans la libération de l’Europe sur l’écran de la télévision française entre 1949 à 2009. Y décelant trois temps, 1949-1963, 1964-mai 1981, mai 1981-2009, elle démontre comment, au cours de ces années, divers facteurs – propres ou extérieurs à ce média- influencent notablement la façon dont les différents documents télévisuels retracent cette histoire. L’analyse met en lumière l’enjeu de mémoire que représente la représentation du rôle des Anglo-Américains dans la Seconde Guerre mondiale : la part changeante qui leur est dévolue peut être perçue comme un révélateur de l’évolution du rapport entretenu par les Français avec cette page de leur histoire. Ce travail pose la question de la perméabilité de la télévision aux influences extérieures dans la mise en forme de son discours ainsi que celle de son rôle comme vecteur d’histoire et de mémoire.
