After the treaty of Francfurt, verdun was again given a great strategic importance, it became the northern mole of the defensive curtain-wall once established in 1874 by the general Séré de Rivières. The improvements brought to that place over a span of 40 years depended on the strategic, tactical and technical conception and on the men who made the decisions in paris, chalons sur marne or verdun. The credits necessary to the edification of the fortification fluctuated with the plans approved of by the ministry of war but mainly with the available funds. The international situation, and especially the relations with germany played a key-role in that matter. About 20 main forts could be built that stopped the German troops from occupying Verdun in 1914, then in 1916.

Verdun, après le traité de Francfort, retrouva une grande importance stratégique et devint le mole nord du rideau défensif mis en place par le général Séré de Rivières à partir de 1874. Les améliorations apportées à cette place durant quarante années varièrent selon les conceptions stratégiques, tactiques et techniques et selon les hommes qui prirent les décisions à Paris, Chalons sur Marne ou Verdun. Les crédits nécessaires à l'édification des fortifications évoluèrent d'après des plans approuvés par le ministère de la guerre mais surtout en fonction des sommes disponibles.
