The study of the cycle of manufacture and use of predynastic ornaments from Adaïma provides an approach to different societal domains : technical, aesthetic and functional. Each of these three socially entangled domains reveals an absence of standardization in the making, composition and use of ornaments. There could be several explanations for this observation. Factors might distort the picture given by the results of the analysis: for example, uncertainty over duration of each chronological phase identified by ceramic typology. On the other hand, a small community open to influences from the Nagadian centres and the neighbouring Nubian region certainly experienced phenomena of cultural recombination. The inhabitants re-appropriate outside references: they innovate. At Adaima, such innovation in ornamentation seems essentially to serve to individualise the deceased.

L'étude du cycle de fabrication et d'utilisation des parures prédynasriques d'Adaïma permet d'aborder différentes sphères de la société : technique, esthétique et fonctionnelle. Ces trois sphères socialement enchevêtrées témoignent d'une absence de normalisation dans la confection, la composition et l'utilisation des parures. Cette constatation peut trouver plusieurs explications. D'une part, l'incertitude de la durée de chaque phase chronologique, déterminée par la typologie céramique, peut fausser l'image donnée par les résultats de l'analyse. D'autre part, une petite communauté réceptive aux influences des centres nagadiens et de la région nubienne a certainement connue des phénomènes de recomposition culturelle. Les habitants se réapproprient alors les références allogènes et, en les imitant, ils innovent. A Adaïma, ces variations dans l'ornementation seraient essentiellement au service d'une individuation des défunts.
