Abstract EN:

To the beginning of the twentieth century, shops which sell wovens are called stores. The leaders of these establishments place new sale methods : no obligation to buy, fixed-price store, prices marked in plain figures, prices down, returned article, clearance sale, and so on. . . . The merchandises proposed to the clients are diversifying : choice of wovens more and more important, ready-made article, small wares, lingerie, and so on. . . . In this era, a new shop which stand at an angle to the streets "du bac" and "de l'universite", is opening. It is called : "au petit saint-thomas". It's founded by simeon mannoury who has before directed another shop : "a saintsulpice", placed "rue du petit lion saint-sulpice". Simeon mannoury has received help from his family, his friends and the "credit foncier de france" which has accorded to him some loans. These contributions of money have permitted to simeon mannoury to realise extension and to effect improvements in the store. The store "au petit saint-thomas" is managed by the same family during all its existence. Each one of his managers has coped with difficulties and concurrence from many business houses as "cheuvreuxaubertot", "au coin de rue", "au gagne-petit", "a la ville des ternes" and many more besides. The success is ensured : the store "au petit saintthomas" attracts a lot of riches clients. The sales are considerable. His renown is international. The store is closed in 1919, owing to consequences of the inundations of 1910 and of the first world war.

Au debut du xixeme siecle, les magasins de tissus prennent le nom de magasins de nouveautes. Les dirigeants de ces etablissements mettent en place de nouvelles methodes de vente : l'entree libre, les prix fixes et marques en chiffres connus, les bas prix, les rendus, les soldes, etc. . . . Les marchandises proposees a la clientele se diversifient : choix de tissus de plus en plus important, articles confectionnes, mercerie, lingerie, etc. . . . C'est durant cette periode que s'ouvre a l'angle des rues du bac et de l'universite, un magasin portant l'enseigne : au petit saint-thomas. Son fondateur, simeon mannoury, a auparavant tenu le magasin a saint-sulpice, rue du petit lion saint-sulpice. Il est aide financierement par sa famille, par des amis et par le credit foncier de france qui lui accordent des prets. Des agrandissements et ameliorations du magasin se succedent. Le magasin du petit saint-thomas est dirige par la meme famille durant presque toute sa duree d'existence. Chacun de ses gerants a du taire face a la concurrence des maisons cheuvreuxaubertot, au coin de rue, au gagne-petit, a la ville des ternes et bien d'autres. Le succes est assure : le magasin attire une clientele nombreuse et riche. Les ventes sont considerables. Sa renommee est internationale. Il ferme ses portes en 1919, suite aux consequences des inondations de 1910 et de la premiere guerre mondiale.
