Marine et industrie en Bretagne : l'arsenal de Brest et les établissements sous-traitants aux XVIIIème et XIXème siècles

This work relates, inside the port of Brest and its industrial environment, the integration, the technical and economical influences of an arsenal for the region where it is established. An arsenal was not an island of modernity in a wild and ignorant country : opened towards sea, it lived from the region providing it men and raw material. This approach explains the choice to present the work in two parts, comparing to classes living, because of the military enceinte, apart from each other but in a real symbiosis. The state navy and an important part of the local private industry worked towards, like today, for the same end : building ships. The thesis concerns less the shipbuilding than essentially the workshops, the manufacturing technics and the savoir-faire.

Ce travail retrace, dans le cadre du port de Brest et de son environnement industriel, les intégrations, les influences techniques aussi bien qu'économiques d'un arsenal de Marine dans sa région d'implantation. L'arsenal n'était pas posé comme un îlot de modernité sur un territoire sauvage et inculte : ouvert sur la mer, il vivait de la terre qui lui fournissait les hommes et les matières premières. Cette approche explique le choix de présenter un travail en deux parties afin de réaliser une analyse comparative de deux milieux évoluant, à cause de l'enceinte militaire, à l'écart l'un de l'autre et pourtant symbiotiquement. La marine d'Etat et l'industrie privée régionale, ou tout au moins une fraction importante de celle-ci, convergèrent ainsi, mais il en est toujours sensiblement de même aujourd'hui, vers un même objectif : produire des navires. La thèse parle peu de la construction navale proprement dite pour s'intéresser essentiellement aux ateliers, aux techniques de fabrication et aux savoir-faire.
