Abstract EN:

The aim of this thesis is a comparative study of trade union approaches - reformist or revolutionary - in the field of culture, the two groupe being at that time organized in two trade union centres : the cgt and the cgtu. This cultural policy was emphasized in the congresses of the cgt and the cgtu. Minutes of those congresses, newspapers, "vie ouvriere", the weekly magazine of the cgtu. "le peuple", the daily paper of the cgt, constitute the majority of sources which were used. The results of the research, contained in two parts, with the thirties constituting the dividing line, lead to two essential conclusions. Cultural leisure activities coincide perfectly, whether they are organized by the cgt or the cgtu which have in common the popular education and culture inherited from the cgt, created in 1895. This identity of approaches disappears when cultural activities deal with the ideological basis of the cgt and the cgtu (as far workers'education is concerned in particular). The differences derive from the contents - reformist or revolutionary - of the changes for which each trade union is fighting, in its own way.

La problematique de cette these est une etude comparative des orientations syndicales, reformistes et revolutionnaires, dans la domaine culturel, les deux courants etant alors organises en deux centrales : la cgt et la cgtu. Cette politique culturelle est precisee par les congres de la cgt et de la cgtu. Les comptes rendus de ces congres, les journaux, la vie ouvriere, hebdomadaire de la cgtu, le peuple, quotidien de la cgt, constituent le corpus essentiel des sources utilisees. Les resultats des recherches, organises en deux parties, les annees trente en constituant la cesure, conduisent a deux grandes conclusions. Les activites ressortissant des loisirs culturels, se recouvrent bords a bords, qu'elles soient initiees par la cgt ou la cgtu, lesquelles ont en commun l'education-culture populaire heritee de la cgt, constituee en mille huit cent quatre-vingt-quinze. Cette identite de vue disparait lorsque les activites culturelles touchent aux fondements ideologiques de la cgt et de la cgtu (education ouvriere notamment). Les clivages tiennent a la conseption, reformiste ou revolutionnaire, des changements pour lesquels lutte, a sa maniere, chaque centrale syndicale.
