L'industrie du verre en afrique romaine (i-viie siecles) : essai de typologie et de chronologie

I have collected and classified according to a morphological typology the roman glassware from morocco, algeria, tunisia and western libya. I studied the glassware in the museums themselves or from publications when the glass itself was unavailable. Each type is compared with the same type of vase discovered elsewhere in the roman world. The better part of the thesis deals with the ordinary ware, of a utilitary type, usually found in africa. I tried to emphasize the relation of this production, from the ist to 4th century, with the gallic and italian production, and with the iberic peninsula, as far as mauretania tingitania is concerned. After the 4th century, the number of shapes is less numerous and they seem to have been influenced by the oriental production. The luxury ware - ie painted or decorated with cut figures - is rare- ly found in north africa. I only found 4 painted glasses, imported from either egypt or italy. As far as cut-figure glass is concerned, most of the 9 pieces i know of were imported from italy or germany - although a few might be of north african manufacture.

Dans ce travail, j'ai recueilli et classe selon une typologie morphologique la verrerie d'epoque romaine du maroc, d'algerie et de tunisie, et celle de libye occidentale. J'ai etudie le materiel sur place dans les musees ou par le biais de publications. Chaque type de verre est compare avec les autres pieces semblables mises au jour ailleurs dans l'empire romain. Le gros du travail traite de la verrerie ordinaire, essentiellement utilitaire, qui est retrouvee en afrique. J'ai tente de souligner le caractere tributaire de cette production, du 1er au 4e s, envers les productions italiennes et gauloises et, a moindre titre, de peninsule iberique pour la mauritanie tingitane. A partir du 4e s. , le repertoire semble s'appauvrir et devient comparable a ce qu'on retrouve dans les provinces orientales. Le verre de "luxe", peint ou grave, est rare en afrique du nord. Je n'ai retrouve que quatre verres a motifs peints qui semblent avoir ete importes d'egypte ou d'italie. Le verre a figure gravee -9 exemplairesa du etre en grande partie importe, lui aussi, de gaule ou de germanie, bien que quelques exemplaires puissent etre d'origine locale. Il est difficile de determiner quand exactement apparut les premiers ateliers de verriers en afrique romaine ; avant le milieu du 1er s de notre ere, nous n'avons aucune trace.
