This analysis deals with the writing of the art history of the 1930s by the first French and British exhibitions catalogues dedicated to it, during the ‘60s and ‘70s. We first question the silence of the museums and galleries on the art of the ‘30s : the role played by social demand, historical analysis and art history practice are examined. An explanation of the emergence of the art of the ‘30s during the ‘60s and ‘70s is then proposed. We underline the fact that the temporal sequence of the second world war comes to an end during the ‘60s and that the evolution of the practices of history and art-history then allowed to think the ‘30s. Finally, the writings of the exhibitions catalogues are analyzed. We examine the position of the catalogues in relation to the modernistic paradigm, then, we show that the evolutions that occurred in the social sciences after the 1930s are nascent in these catalogues.

Cette analyse porte sur l’écriture de l’histoire de l’art des années 30 par les premiers catalogues d’expositions britanniques et français qui lui sont consacrés, dans les années 60 et 70. Le silence des lieux d’expositions sur l’art des années 30 est d’abord questionné : les rôles joués par la demande sociale, par la pratique de l’histoire et par celle de l’histoire de l’art sont interrogés. Une explication à l’émergence de l’art des années 30 à partir des années 60 et 70 est ensuite proposée. Il est noté que la séquence temporelle de la seconde guerre prend alors fin et que l’évolution des pratiques historienne et art-historienne a permis de penser les années 30. Enfin, l’écriture des catalogues d’expositions est analysée. La position des catalogues face au paradigme moderniste est d’abord étudiée, et il est ensuite montré que les évolutions produites dans le champ des sciences sociales se donnent à lire dans les catalogues.
