The advent of the all-volonteer forces has led to a profound change in the French defence system. The suspension of the draft, a new policy attuned to international and European issues, the restructuring of public management and the increasing weight of humanitarian concerns have combined to bring about a reshaping of the identity of the French soldier. To fully grasp the extent of such a reform and its impact on defence awareness within French society is the primary aim of this dissertation. The survival of the bond between the nation and its armed forces in the context of globalization and new strategic policies, together with the necessary mending of the social fabric loom large in the following pages.

La professionnalisation des armées, couvrant la période 1996-2007, a entraîné la transformation de l’appareil de défense français. Au cœur de cette transformation, la suspension du service national, la rationalisation accrue des budgets, l’existence et la prolifération de nouveaux contextes d’intervention, la montée en puissance de l’Europe de la défense, sont autant de facteurs qui impliquent un bouleversement identitaire pour le militaire français. Comprendre les enjeux d’une telle réforme et son impact tant sur l’armée que sur la société civile dans leur rapport à l’esprit et au devoir de défense, saisir les conditions de possibilité de la survie du lien armées-nation à l’heure de l’armée professionnelle ainsi que ce qu’implique pour les Français et leur Etat l’abandon de la conscription, constituent les idées directrices de cette thèse.
