Les chatiments infernaux dans l'antiquite classique

This work is a study on the iconography of the punishments in hells on the greek and roman civilization from the seventh century before christ to the third century a. D. It consists of a catalogue composed of the description of each document where is illustrated the different punishments, it is extended to some etruscan images, and of a commentary composed of a monography for each principal figure : tantalos, sisyphos, tityos, theseus and pirithoos, the danaids, ocnos and of a research about the other legendary figures who are sometimes illustrated or rarely named in the literature, then of a study on the intended lot for the nameless damned in the different sects and philosophical schools. In each case we look for the establishment of the relation between the faults and the punishment that they involve for the culprits.

Ce travail a pour point de depart l'iconographie des chatiments dans les enfers dans les civilisations grecques et romaines du septieme siecle avant j-c au troisieme siecle apres j-c. Il se compose d'un catalogue ou sont decrits les documents ou sont illustres les differents supplices, augmente de quelques documents etrusques et d'un commentaire compose d'une monographie pour chacun des personnages principaux : tityos, sisyphe, tantale, ixion, thesee et pirithoos, les danaides, ocnos et d'une recherche sur les autres figures legendaires qui sont parfois illustrees ou mentionnees rarement dans la litterature, puis d'une etude sur le sort reserve aux ames des damnes anonymes dans les differentes sectes et ecoles philosophiques. Dans chaque cas, on a cherche a etablir le rapport entre les fautes et le chatiment qu'elles ont entraine pour le coupable.
