The le mans roman wall remains one of the most prestigious monuments of the later empire in gul. Its study is made up of a collection of the written sources and of bibliography enbling the reader to get to know the subject, followed by a survey of all the wrintings concerning the other townvalls of gaul. After a presentation of the urban site and of its changes up to the end of the third century, the topographical elements, the plan and the description of this wall form the subject of a detailed analysis based on a large number of plans. The techniques, the methods of contruction, as well as the decorations on the facings show the development of the work as they carried out. The problem of dating the wall is tackled through the archeological documentation specific to the site. For each of the themes desit with, many comparisons with other roman walls are made. They explain the complexity of those contructions which are related to the major problem of the times : that of the defense of gaul.

L'enceinte romaine de la ville du mans reste l'un des monuments les plus prestigieux du bus-empire en gaule. Son etude comporte un repertoire des sources ecrites et une bibliographie permettant de se familiariser avec le theme, suivi d'un inventaire bibliographique portant sur les autres enceintes de la gaule. Apres une presentation du site urbain et de ses transformations jusqu'a la fin du troisieme siecle, les elements de tophographie, le plan et la description de cette enceinte font l'objet d'une analyse detaillee qui s'appuie sur tout un dossier de plans. Les techniques et les modes de construction ainsi que la decoration des parements demontrent l'evolution des travaux lois de leur mise en oeuvre. Le probleme de la datation de l'enceinte est aborde a partir d'une documentation archeologique propre au site. Pour chacun des themes traites, il est toujours fait appel a des comparaisons nombreuses avec les autres enceintes romaines. Elles permettent de comprendre la complexite de ces constructions qui se rapportent au grand probleme du temps : celui de la defense de la gaule.
