After knowing considerable wealth which increased over a period of three hundred years, the british west indies sank into instant bankrupcy after the abolition of slavery. In order to get the ruined economy sarted again, indentured labourers were brought from madeira, india and as far as china. The arrival of these foreigners diversified the ethnosocial pattern of the colonies. Yet, the conditions under which this increase of population took place caused the society to split. In guyana, this evolved into a situation of political and racial prejudice and unrest. When the british west indies were able to master their own destiny, they made an attempt to federate. Unfortunately, it failed. Yet, the idea remained vivid, and it ultimately led to the creation of a common market : the caricom, which has now become a homogeneous force to reckon with in this region of the world so much looked upon by the great nations of our times.

Les antilles britanniques, apres avoir connu une prosperite considerable qui ne cessa de croitre pendant trois siecles, sombrerent dans la ruine immediate apres l'abolition de l'esclavage. Afin de relancer une economie a l'abandon, on alla recruter des ouvriers sous contrat a madere, en inde et meme en chine. L'arrivee de ces etrangers diversifia la composition ethno-sociale des colonies. Les conditions dans lesquelles cet apport de population se produisit cloisonnerent la societe, en guyana en particulier ou cela entraina une scission dans la societe, qui evolua en clivage politique et racial. Lorsque les antilles britanniques furent en mesure de prendre leur destin en main, on s'orienta vers un projet de federation. Il echoua. L'idee qu'il representait, cependant, evolua en un marche commun, le caricom, qui s'efforce de creer dans cette region tres enviee du monde, une force economique homogene pour s'opposer aux avidites des grandes puissances de notrre epoque.
